Moana-
Good evening TPS and teachers, this week for samoan language week, room 7 made a Siapo and read a story about the Samoan history called “Samoan independence”.
This is how we made our siapo, because we didn’t have the raw materials so we improvised by using cardboard and paint.

First, we grabbed a piece of cardboard paper and drew our designs on them

Next, we drew our design with pencil then we went over it with black paint or vivid so we can highlight our siapo.
After that we painted it with colours, most kids used primary colours or colours from the Samoan flag, Mrs Tafea was super impressed about our siapo artwork.

Lastly we let them dry overnight. So after the artworks were dried up, Mrs Tafea had to cut the white parts around the siapo. She cutted them in squares so she could put them on a big piece of paper.

Samoa Tutoatasi ( independence)

Samoa independence

Samoa is a very beautiful big island. In 2012, the people of Samoa celebrated their country’s fiftieth year of tutoatasi (independence). Independence day in Samoa is when Samoa has a public holiday.Samoa was broken into two pieces.

The largest part ( in the West ) was taken by Germany and it was a German colony, the US took over the east side of Samoa. It was strange to Samoa villages and chiefs because they noticed that their wonderful own country didn’t belong to them anymore. Mata’afa Iosefa who is the strongest chief in Samoa watched their enemies arrive (German). He defeated the German troop before in Samoa but this time he chose to drop his weapons. War between Samoa and tagata papalagi (Europeans) caused danger for the islanders, like other samoan leaders, Mata’afa hoped that the Europeans might allow them to govern themselves, just like what was happening in Tonga.

Treaty of Waitangi

What is the story about? How do you know
The story is about the founding document :Treaty of Waitangi because it's an agreement between the Queen of England and more than five hundred maori chiefs. They believe that it will give them protection and it will stop all the wars from happening.

Why did the author write this story? Why do you think that?
Ross Calmen wrote this story because it will remind us about the Treaty of Waitangi once a year.

What were the main idea(s) of what you read? What were the supporting details that told you more about the main ideas?
The main idea is the Treaty of Waitangi and the supporting detail that helped us was the title: The Treaty of Waitangi.

What did you find interesting as you were reading today?
The most interesting part of the story I read about is that pakeha hunted before maori because Maori didn’t have any hunting weapons and they didn’t know what to do.
